デンマークの鬼才フォン・トリアーが、長編監督第2作となる本作では実験的な映画作りに挑戦。映画監督と脚本家が伝染病を題材に新作の構想を練る間に、恐るべき伝染病が現実の世界でも蔓延。映画製作の舞台裏のプロセスと、映画の中の虚構の物語が並行して進行するうち、いつしか両者の境界が溶解し、虚実入り混じった悪夢のような世界が立ち現われるさまを戦慄的に描く。出演は、フォン・トリアー本人や、「エレメント・オブ・クライム」以来、彼と数多くのコンビを組む脚本家のN・ヴァセル、怪優U・キアーほか。 フロッピーディスクの中にしまっておいたはずの新作映画の脚本が消えてしまい、映画監督のフォン・トリアーと脚本家のヴァセルは思わず仰天。2人はその脚本を、5日後に海外旅行から帰国するプロデューサーに提出する予定だった。「警官と娼婦」と題されたその脚本を2人は懸命に思い出そうとするがうまくいかず、この際いっそ別の脚本を一から書こうと、「エピデミック（＝伝染病）」と題した、新たな物語の構想を練り始める。
