A group of people are standing along the platform of a railway station in La Ciotat, waiting for a train. One is seen coming, at some distance, and eventually stops at the platform. Doors of the railway-cars open and attendants help passengers off and on. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the café in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. This legend has since been identified as promotional embellishment, though there is evidence to suggest that people were astounded at the capabilities of the Lumières' cinématographe.

９０年にほぼ原型に近い形に修復された版（従って本篇の前に、そのいきさつの解説が若干つく）の公開によって、日本でもようやく一般に見られるようになったＪ・ヴィゴの傑作である。アタラント号とは、ル・アヴールとその上流の田舎町を往復している艀。その若き船長の新妻が都会の誘惑にかられ、パリに近づいた折りにこっそり抜け出すが、怒った夫は彼女を置いて出航する。しかし、愛妻なしの彼はまるで腑抜けで、急に川に飛び込み、彼女の幻影を見たりしている。一方、妻はひったくりにあい、帰るに帰れず、同船している老水夫ジュール親爺（Ｍ・シモン）により、ようやく探し出される。話は俗なものだが、詩的で自由奔放な表現、キャラクターが際立つ肉体性の把握、溢れるユーモア……映画の官能が蒸気となって観客を包み込んでしまう、これは聖なる映画と言えるかも知れない。何度観てもはぐらかされ、不安なときめきを覚える。幼い子供と遊ぶのに似た、つき詰めようのない快楽を帯びた映画。Ｍ・シモンの醜い外見に惑わされてはいけない。彼こそが天使だ。

Bumbling professor Ned Brainard accidentally invents flying rubber, or "Flubber", an incredible material that gains energy every time it strikes a hard surface. It allows for the invention of shoes that can allow jumps of amazing heights and enables a modified Model-T to fly. Dr. Génessier is riddled with guilt after an accident that he caused disfigures the face of his daughter, the once beautiful Christiane, who outsiders believe is dead. After rendering his victims unconscious, Dr. Génessier removes their faces and attempts to graft them on to Christiane's.
