そもそもは、連載を予定していた作品ではなく、コンプティークで急にページが空いてしまい、そこを埋めるために掲載したのが始まりだが、人気を博したため連載となった。タイトルは、“Lucky Star（ラッキースター）”の意味であり、単行本表紙のロゴにもデザインされている。連載開始時は、主な登場人物4名は高校1年生で、実際の年度が進むと共に2年生、さらに3年生へと進級している（アニメの開始時点では2年生）。ほとんどのキャラクターが左利きである。 女の子たちの、まったり、ゆる～いふだんの生活を描く。
