In the ruins of post-WWII Berlin, a twelve-year-old boy is left to his own devices in order to help provide for his family.

孤高の映画詩人ブレッソンの表現が精神の極みへと向って行く姿勢は、このごく初期の作品にも端的に見られる。それは悩み深き若い司祭を主人公にしているという表層からでなく、その懊悩を突き放すように客体化する、怜悧なまでの映像の力によって痛感させられるのだ。田舎司祭を取り巻く人々の聖と俗に揺れる姿が、彼の信仰にどう関わり、彼が自らどのような答えを出して行くかが、正に日記を綴る描写を挿し挟みながらスケッチされて行くが、彼は次第に懐疑的にならざるをえなくなり、健康をも害してしまう。ブレッソンのどの映画を見てもそうだが、描写の余りの潔癖さに、他のイメージに置き換えながら（詰まり自分流の翻訳をしつつ）見たくなるほど、純度の高い映画だ。 ＜allcinema＞

９０年にほぼ原型に近い形に修復された版（従って本篇の前に、そのいきさつの解説が若干つく）の公開によって、日本でもようやく一般に見られるようになったＪ・ヴィゴの傑作である。アタラント号とは、ル・アヴールとその上流の田舎町を往復している艀。その若き船長の新妻が都会の誘惑にかられ、パリに近づいた折りにこっそり抜け出すが、怒った夫は彼女を置いて出航する。しかし、愛妻なしの彼はまるで腑抜けで、急に川に飛び込み、彼女の幻影を見たりしている。一方、妻はひったくりにあい、帰るに帰れず、同船している老水夫ジュール親爺（Ｍ・シモン）により、ようやく探し出される。話は俗なものだが、詩的で自由奔放な表現、キャラクターが際立つ肉体性の把握、溢れるユーモア……映画の官能が蒸気となって観客を包み込んでしまう、これは聖なる映画と言えるかも知れない。何度観てもはぐらかされ、不安なときめきを覚える。幼い子供と遊ぶのに似た、つき詰めようのない快楽を帯びた映画。Ｍ・シモンの醜い外見に惑わされてはいけない。彼こそが天使だ。

Viridiana is preparing to start her life as a nun when she is sent, somewhat unwillingly, to visit her aging uncle, Don Jaime. He supports her; but the two have met only once. Jaime thinks Viridiana resembles his dead wife. Viridiana has secretly despised this man all her life and finds her worst fears proven when Jaime grows determined to seduce his pure niece.
